For optical parts such as lenses, light guides, transparent covers, and medical viewing components, transparency and clarity are critical quality indicators. These properties are highly sensitive to temperature consistency, making thermocouples one of the most influential components in optical hot runner molding. Even minor temperature instability can cause molecular orientation, residual stress, flow marks, or thermal degradation, all of which reduce light transmittance and create visual defects.
Thermocouples maintain precise, stable temperatures to ensure the melt flows smoothly without sudden changes in viscosity. When temperature varies, the melt front speed fluctuates, leading to visible flow lines or cloudiness. Overheating caused by drifting thermocouples decomposes the resin, creating yellowing or black specks that ruin optical clarity. For materials like PC, PMMA, and COC, which have extremely narrow processing windows, thermocouple accuracy directly determines whether parts meet optical standards.
In multi-cavity optical molds, temperature uniformity between nozzles is essential. A difference of just a few degrees results in parts with varying levels of transparency and internal stress. High-precision, low-drift thermocouples ensure each cavity operates under identical thermal conditions. Fast response also prevents overshoot during startup or adjustment, avoiding damage to heat-sensitive optical materials. Without high-performance thermocouples, mass production of high-quality optical components is practically impossible.
