How Do Thermocouples Affect the Dimensional Tolerance of Injection Molded Parts?

Dimensional tolerance is a key requirement in technical molding, especially for assembled components. Parts that are too large or too small cannot be assembled, leading to high rejection rates. Temperature is one of the most significant variables affecting shrinkage and dimensions, and thermocouples directly control this variable.

Melt temperature determines the volumetric shrinkage of the plastic as it cools. If thermocouples drift or fluctuate, shrinkage rate changes unpredictably, causing parts to fall outside tolerance. Stable sensing ensures consistent cooling behavior and tight dimensional control.

Overheating caused by inaccurate thermocouples increases post-molding shrinkage, leading to smaller-than-expected parts. Conversely, low temperatures result in incomplete packing and larger dimensions. Accurate thermocouples maintain the optimal temperature window.

In multi-cavity molds, temperature imbalance from faulty sensors causes cavity-to-cavity dimensional variation. Parts from different cavities may have different sizes, making assembly impossible. Uniform thermocouple performance ensures consistent dimensions across all cavities.

Fast-response thermocouples maintain stability during injection and packing, reducing variation between cycles. This improves process capability and Cpk values.

For precision components, even 1°C of temperature variation can affect dimensions. High-quality thermocouples provide the stability required to meet tight tolerance requirements.333
