Type K and Type J thermocouples are the two most widely used and standard sensing elements in hot runner systems, each with unique characteristics, advantages, and suitable application scenarios. Type K thermocouples, composed of chromel-alumel alloys, offer a very wide operating temperature range, excellent oxidation resistance, stable performance, and high cost-effectiveness, making them suitable for most general and high-temperature injection molding applications. They are the default standard choice for leading global hot runner brands including Mold-Masters, Husky, Synventive, HRSflow, and YUDO. Type J thermocouples, composed of iron-constantan alloys, provide high accuracy and stability in moderate-temperature environments but have lower overall heat resistance and are more prone to oxidation and degradation at high temperatures. Type K thermocouples perform significantly better in long-term high-temperature conditions, while Type J thermocouples are often used in low-to-medium temperature applications or non-oxidation environments. The selection between Type K and Type J depends on actual molding temperature, plastic material type, expected service life, and specific environmental conditions. Using an inappropriate thermocouple type may cause accelerated aging, severe temperature drift, early failure, and unstable processing. Both types are available in various product forms including mineral-insulated, spring-loaded, right-angle, and quick-plug designs to meet different installation needs. They are widely applied across automotive, electronics, packaging, medical, home appliance, and consumer goods industries. Understanding the performance differences and application boundaries helps users avoid common selection mistakes and ensure stable temperature control. Correct thermocouple type selection is a basic but critical step to ensure long service life, stable performance, and consistent high-quality molding.333
