Thermocouple placement is one of the most critical design factors in hot runner performance, as even the best sensor will deliver poor results if positioned incorrectly. In nozzles, the thermocouple must be placed close enough to the melt channel to detect real temperature changes rapidly, yet not so close that it interferes with flow or structural integrity.
If the thermocouple is too far from the melt, measurement lags behind actual conditions, leading to delayed controller response and temperature overshoot. If inserted too deeply, it may disrupt flow, create dead zones, or even break under melt pressure. Ideal placement places the sensing junction near the nozzle tip where temperature most directly affects filling, gate behavior, and melt quality.
Different nozzle styles require different placement strategies. Open gates need sensing near the tip to control drool and stringing. Valve gates require stable readings away from mechanical vibration. Hot runner manufacturers invest significant engineering effort into optimizing thermocouple placement to balance speed, accuracy, and durability. For replacement sensors, using OEM-specified length and position ensures consistent performance.
