Determining whether grain growth has occurred in a hot runner system primarily involves metallographic examination and mechanical property testing, with metallographic examination being the most direct and reliable method.

 

1. Metallographic Examination (Most Direct Method)

Principle: A metallographic sample is prepared by cutting the key heated area of ​​the hot runner mold. The grain size and morphology are then observed using an optical microscope or electron microscope.

Judgment Criteria:

Normal Grains: Uniformly distributed and small in size (typically 8–10 grain size grade);

Abnormal Growth: Significantly coarsened grains, exhibiting a "large grain engulfing smaller grains" phenomenon, and even showing secondary recrystallization characteristics.

Testing Basis: Grain size is rated according to the national standard GB/T 6394. If the measured grain size is below grade 5, it can be determined as abnormal grain growth.

Advantages: It allows for direct observation of grain boundary migration and grain engulfment processes, making it the gold standard for determining grain growth.

 

2. Tensile Property Testing (Indirect Judgment)

Principle: Grain coarsening leads to a decrease in material strength and ductility. By testing the tensile strength and elongation of hot runner steel, the grain structure is indirectly reflected.

Typical Manifestations:

Reduced Strength: Coarse grains reduce grain boundary area, decreasing load-bearing capacity;

Deteriorated Ductility: The material becomes brittle, and the elongation after fracture decreases significantly.

Applicable Scenarios: Suitable for in-service components where metallographic sampling is not feasible, serving as an auxiliary judgment method.

Note: Hardness testing and eddy current testing cannot reliably determine grain growth due to susceptibility to interference from other factors.
