How to Determine if a Color-Changing Silica Gel Desiccant Has Expired

When a color-changing silica gel desiccant becomes ineffective, it will change from blue to pink or red. This is the most direct and reliable way to determine if it has failed.

1. Color Change: The Core Judgment Criterion

Color-changing silica gel contains cobalt chloride (CoCl₂) as a humidity indicator. Its color changes with the degree of moisture absorption:

Effective State (Dry): Anhydrous cobalt chloride is blue, indicating that it still has strong moisture absorption capacity;

Ineffective State (Moisture Saturation): After absorbing moisture, it forms cobalt chloride hexahydrate (CoCl₂·6H₂O), and the color turns pink or red, indicating that it has lost its drying function.

Color change is used as a visual indicator in laboratories, electronic equipment, and pharmaceutical packaging.

Operating Instructions

Judgment Basis

Observe the Color Change Ratio

Check the percentage of color-changed portion in the silica gel granules.

≥1/3 color change indicates a significant decrease in moisture absorption efficiency; replacement is recommended.

Touch and Feel

Take a small amount of granules and gently squeeze.

Clumping/hardening → Severe moisture absorption; Loose → Still effective.

Ambient Humidity

Check if the usage environment is consistently humid.

High humidity environments (such as Wuhan's rainy season) can cause rapid failure.

Regeneration Test

Bake the reddened silica gel at 100–120℃ for 1–2 hours.

If it can return to blue → Reusable; No color change → Aging and failure.

If the silica gel turns completely red and cannot be restored to blue by heating, it has reached its service life limit.

3. Precautions

Avoid misjudgment: Some environmentally friendly silica gels exhibit an orange-to-green color-changing system; please refer to the product instructions.

Safety tips: Silica gel containing cobalt chloride is toxic and should not come into contact with food or be ingested. Hand washing is recommended after handling.

Timely handling: If discoloration is observed, regenerate or replace the product as soon as possible to prevent moisture damage.
