The first step is to define the calibration policy. The policy should specify the calibration interval (e.g., every 6 months for critical zones, annually for standard zones), the acceptance criteria (e.g., deviation ≤ ±1.5°C), and the traceability to national standards (e.g., NIST). The second step is to maintain a calibration master list. This list includes every thermocouple in the plant, its unique identifier (e.g., zone number), its type, its calibration due date, and its last calibration result. The third step is to use calibrated reference standards. The reference thermocouples used for calibration must themselves be calibrated by an accredited laboratory, with a certificate that is traceable to national standards. This ensures that the calibration is valid. The fourth step is to perform the calibration. The record should be signed and dated. The sixth step is to take corrective action if a thermocouple fails calibration. Document the failure, the corrective action (e.g., replacement, controller offset adjusted), and the verification that the corrective action was effective. The seventh step is to review the calibration data periodically. If a particular thermocouple shows a consistent trend (e.g., drift increasing), the calibration interval can be shortened, or the thermocouple can be replaced. The eighth step is to have the calibration process audited by an external auditor. The auditor will review the calibration policy, the master list, the calibration records, and the traceability of the reference standards. They may also witness a calibration.
