Managing thermocouple spares across many molds can be chaotic. Different molds, different zones, different sensor types. A systematic approach saves time, money, and stress. Here's how to keep it under control.
Centralizing Inventory
Instead of each maintenance person keeping their own stash, centralize thermocouple inventory. One location, one system. This prevents duplicate purchases and ensures that what's "in stock" is actually available. It also makes it easier to track usage and reorder when levels are low.
ABC Classification
Classify spares by criticality. "A" items are critical-without them, production stops. These should be stocked at higher levels. "B" items are important but have alternatives or can be fabricated. "C" items are nice to have but not essential. Focus your inventory investment on the A items.
Minimum Stock Levels
Establish minimum stock levels for each thermocouple type. When inventory drops to the minimum, reorder. The minimum should be based on consumption rate and lead time. If a sensor is used quarterly and takes two weeks to get, the minimum might be one or two units. If it's used weekly and takes four weeks, the minimum should be higher.
Standardizing Where Possible
If you can standardize on one or two thermocouple types across multiple molds, you reduce inventory complexity. Standard lengths, standard connectors, standard types (J or K). Each mold variation adds a unique part number. Minimizing variations simplifies spare management.
The "First In, First Out" Rule
Thermocouples degrade over time, even in storage. Use the oldest spares first. Rotate your inventory to prevent obsolescence. This is especially important for mineral-insulated thermocouples, which absorb moisture over time.
Consignment with Suppliers
Some suppliers offer consignment inventory-they stock your most common thermocouples on-site and you pay when you use them. This reduces your inventory investment and ensures availability. If your usage is predictable, this can be a great arrangement.
Documenting Spare Locations
Keep a map or spreadsheet showing where each thermocouple type is stored. Time wasted searching for spares is expensive. A simple labeled bin system with a master list is sufficient. The goal is for anyone to find the right spare in under a minute.
