The key to preventing magnesium oxide from absorbing moisture lies in airtight packaging, controlling the humidity of the storage environment, and using moisture-proof materials to block moisture contact at the source.
1. Packaging Protection Measures
Double-layer sealed packaging: The inner layer uses a polyethylene (PE) plastic film bag, which is heat-sealed after air is expelled; the outer layer is sealed with an aluminum foil composite bag or a moisture-proof woven bag to improve barrier properties.
Vacuum sealing or nitrogen filling: For highly active or long-term stored magnesium oxide, it is recommended to vacuum or fill with nitrogen to remove oxygen and moisture.
Built-in desiccant: Add 5–10g of silica gel desiccant to each bag to continuously absorb trace amounts of moisture and prevent slow-release moisture absorption.
It is recommended to use aluminum foil bags with self-sealing strips for easy access and better moisture protection.
2. Storage Environment Control
Humidity Management: The relative humidity of the storage environment should be controlled below 50%. An electronic thermometer and hygrometer can be used for real-time monitoring.
Temperature Stability: Avoid high temperatures (>35℃) and large day-night temperature differences to prevent condensation and localized moisture absorption.
Ventilation and Drying: Maintain good ventilation in the warehouse. Elevate the floor by at least 10cm and keep away from water pipes, steam equipment, and other sources of moisture.
Dehumidifiers or lime bags can be placed around the stacks of goods to further reduce localized humidity.
3. Daily Operation Procedures
First-In, First-Out (FIFO) Principle: Use materials in the order they enter the warehouse to avoid long-term accumulation that leads to natural degradation of activity.
Quick Access and Sealing: Weigh and dispense the material as soon as possible after opening the bag. Immediately reseal or heat-seal the bag after use.
Avoid Exposed Storage: Magnesium oxide must never be left exposed on workshop or laboratory surfaces. It should always be stored in its original packaging.
For frequent use scenarios, it can be repackaged into smaller packages to reduce the risk of repeatedly opening the main packaging.
