Cleanroom packaging molding, used for pharmaceutical, food, and electronic components, requires thermocouples that meet stringent cleanliness and performance standards. The first selection criterion is particle generation. The thermocouple must not shed any particles that could contaminate the packaging. The sheath and cable should be made of materials that are low-shedding (e.g., PTFE, which is smooth and does not flake). The second criterion is outgassing. The thermocouple materials must not release any volatiles that could condense on the packaging or the mold surface. PTFE and high-purity silicone are low-outgassing materials. The third criterion is chemical resistance. Cleanrooms are often cleaned with aggressive solvents and disinfectants. The thermocouple sheath and cable must be resistant to these chemicals. Inconel sheaths are resistant to most solvents. The fourth criterion is the ability to be sterilized. If the packaging is sterile, the mold may be sterilized. The thermocouple must be calibrated with a certificate traceable to national standards. The calibration must be performed in a clean environment. The eighth criterion is the documentation. The thermocouple must have a unique serial number and a complete material certificate. The ninth criterion is the cost. Cleanroom-compliant thermocouples are more expensive than standard ones. However, the cost of contamination (product recall, lost business) is far greater.
