How to Store Dried Magnesium Oxide

After drying, magnesium oxide should be stored in a sealed container in a dry, cool, and well-ventilated environment to prevent moisture absorption and contamination, thus maintaining its activity and chemical stability.

1. Storage Environment Requirements

Dryness: The relative humidity should be controlled below 50%. A hygrometer can be used for monitoring to prevent magnesium oxide from reabsorbing moisture.

Cool and Ventilated: Avoid direct sunlight and high temperatures (preferably below 35℃) to prevent thermal decomposition or decreased activity.

Clean and Contamination-Free: Keep away from acidic gases, moisture sources (such as water pipes and steam equipment), and other chemicals to prevent cross-reactions.

An electronic thermometer and hygrometer can be placed in the warehouse for real-time monitoring to ensure stable storage conditions.

2. Packaging and Sealing Measures

Double-layer sealed packaging: The inner layer uses a polyethylene plastic film bag, which is sealed tightly after air is expelled; the outer layer is sealed with a moisture-proof woven bag.

Inert gas purging (suitable for high-purity/active magnesium oxide): Nitrogen gas is filled into the packaging bag to further isolate it from oxygen and moisture.

Sealing management: Reseal immediately after use, using a heat sealer or clamps to avoid prolonged exposure to air.

Aluminum foil bags with self-sealing strips are recommended for easy reuse and better moisture protection.

3. Stacking and Inventory Management

Store off the ground and away from walls: Elevate pallets at least 10cm and maintain a distance of at least 30cm from walls to prevent moisture conduction from the ground.

First-in, first-out (FIFO) principle: Use according to the order of receipt to avoid long-term accumulation leading to natural degradation of activity.

Store separately: Do not store with other chemicals, especially avoid coexistence with chlorides and acids.

A plastic film or moisture-proof mat can be laid at the bottom of the stack, and desiccant packets can be placed around it for enhanced protection.

4. Storage Period Recommendations

Ordinary magnesium oxide: It is recommended to use it within 6 months;

High-purity/active magnesium oxide: The optimal usage period is within 3 months. Prolonged storage will cause it to slowly convert to Mg(OH)₂, reducing its activity.

For long-term storage, it is recommended to regularly check the moisture content (every 30 days) to ensure stable quality.
