Improperly closed gates in hot runner systems, particularly in valve-gate systems, can cause drool, stringing, and part defects. Thermocouples can provide indirect detection of this issue. The first sign of an improperly closed gate is a temperature change at the gate. If the gate is not completely closed, a small amount of hot melt may continue to flow, causing a localized temperature increase. The thermocouple near the gate will detect this increase. The second sign is an unstable temperature. If the gate is intermittently opening and closing (due to a hydraulic or pneumatic issue), the temperature will fluctuate. The thermocouple reading will be noisy. The third sign is a change in the required heater power. If the gate is leaking, the leaking melt acts as a heat conductor, transferring heat away from the gate. The controller will apply more power to compensate. An increase in the power percentage may indicate a leaking gate. The fourth step is to correlate the thermocouple data with the valve pin position. In a valve-gate system, the valve pin position is controlled by a hydraulic or pneumatic cylinder. If the thermocouple shows a temperature spike when the pin is supposed to be closed, it indicates that the pin is not sealing properly. The fifth step is to perform a "drool test." After a cycle, observe the gate. If there is any drool, it indicates that the gate is not completely closed. The thermocouple data can be used to determine if the drool occurred during a particular phase of the cycle. The sixth step is to use a thermal imager. A leaking gate will show as a hot spot on the nozzle tip. The thermocouple data can prompt this inspection. The seventh step is to check the valve pin stroke. If the valve pin is not traveling its full stroke, it may not completely seal the gate. The thermocouple data can help identify the zone that is affected. The eighth step is to take corrective action. If a gate is improperly closed, it may require adjusting the valve pin stroke, replacing the valve pin, or repairing the hydraulic or pneumatic system. By using thermocouple data to detect improperly closed gates, molders can prevent drool and stringing, improving part quality and reducing scrap.
