Outgassing is the release of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), moisture vapor, or residual chemicals from materials when heated. In medical device, food packaging, and cleanroom molding, outgassing can contaminate parts, affect biocompatibility, leave surface deposits, or violate strict regulatory standards. Standard industrial thermocouples use organic binders, plastic cable jackets, and low-grade sealing materials that outgas significantly at processing temperatures. Low-outgassing thermocouples use several key design features. They employ high-purity, inorganic MgO insulation with no organic additives. The cable jacket uses low-outgassing fluoropolymer or ceramic-compatible materials. Sealing at the cable transition uses glass or ceramic compression seals rather than organic adhesives. All materials are selected to comply with FDA, ISO 10993, and EU food contact standards.
Smooth, crevice-free, electropolished surfaces also prevent particle generation and residue accumulation, supporting cleanroom requirements. Hermetic sealing ensures no internal materials can escape or outgas into the molding environment.
