What Constitutes Protection for Hot Runner Connectors?

In industrial injection molding environments, hot runner connectors are constantly subjected to conditions involving high temperatures, high pressures, and frequent mating/unmating cycles; consequently, their connection stability and electrical safety are of paramount importance. Effective protection not only prevents safety incidents-such as short circuits and fires-but also significantly extends the service life of the equipment.

1. Protection Against Physical Impact: Anti-Collision Structural Design

To prevent external objects from striking the connectors and junction boxes during mold movement or operational procedures, Shenzhen Fenda Technology has developed and patented a specific technology:

It employs a four-sided enclosure-style anti-collision structure-composed of multiple protective plates-that completely encases the junction box and connectors.

The top edge of the protective plates is positioned flush with-or slightly higher than-the connectors, ensuring that any impact originating from above or from the sides is effectively blocked.

This type of structural design enhances the operational reliability of the connectors and extends their overall service life.

2. Electrical Safety Protection: Wiring and Insulation Safeguards

Electrical hazards constitute one of the primary risks within hot runner systems and require focused preventive measures:

Wire Selection: Silicone-insulated wires or fiberglass-insulated wires should be utilized, featuring a temperature resistance exceeding 300°C and a voltage rating of ≥500V, to prevent the insulation layer from aging or degrading due to high temperatures.

Prevention of Moisture Intrusion: During wiring installation, cables should be routed away from cooling water channels to prevent condensation from coming into contact with live electrical components, thereby avoiding short circuits or leakage currents.

Regular Inspections: Prior to powering up the system for each operation cycle, the connectors should be inspected for any looseness. Loose connections can lead to increased contact resistance, potentially causing localized overheating or even igniting a fire.

3. Environmental Protection: Sealing and Corrosion Resistance

Protection Class Requirements: It is recommended to select connectors with an IP65 protection rating (such as those in the HARTING series), as these effectively guard against dust ingress and splashing water.

Storage and Maintenance: When a mold is to remain idle for an extended period, any residual moisture or oil/grease residues should be thoroughly removed. A corrosion inhibitor should then be applied, and the mold-along with its connectors-should be stored in a dry, well-ventilated environment to prevent oxidation or moisture-induced damage to the connector contacts.

4. Brand and Product References

Wenbuluo (Jiangsu Wenbuluo Wiring Equipment Co., Ltd.): Offers the "HE Series" of heavy-duty connectors, supporting configurations ranging from 10 to 48 pins, which are specifically designed for use in industrial hot runner systems. Nanaboshi (Japan): NCS-4010-R Mold Hot Runner Connector-UL/CE/CCC certified, with an operating voltage of AC 220V / DC 200V.

HARTING: Widely utilized in the field of injection molding machinery, offering various configurations-including 16-pin and 24-pin options-and featuring high levels of protection and durability.
