Medical injection molding has the strictest requirements for hot runner thermocouples in all industries, with mandatory standards in temperature precision, surface cleanliness, material biocompatibility and anti-contamination performance, and ordinary standard thermocouples cannot meet the production certification requirements of ISO 13485 and FDA. Medical hot runner products are mainly used for insulin pens, disposable syringes, blood test cards, surgical plastic accessories and micro drug delivery components, most of which adopt micro needle valve gate hot runners with multi-cavity tiny nozzles, requiring customized miniature high-precision thermocouple solutions. The first core requirement is ultra-small volume: most medical nozzles have an outer diameter less than 6mm, and the reserved sensing hole can only accommodate 0.5–0.8mm ultra-thin MI thermocouples, which need to adopt imported high-purity magnesium oxide mineral powder to ensure insulation without increasing sheath thickness.
Material safety is the primary screening standard for medical thermocouples. Ordinary SS304 steel sheaths contain trace heavy metal precipitates under long-term high temperature, which may contaminate medical plastic melts, so medical dedicated thermocouples use fully polished SS316L or Inconel 600 sheaths without surface scratches and rust dead corners, avoiding residue accumulation of plastic decomposition gas. The welding junction of the sensor adopts vacuum welding technology without solder residue falling off; all external wires use high-temperature PTFE insulation layers that do not release toxic volatile substances when heated, completely avoiding cross-contamination of sterile medical parts. In terms of thermoelectric alloy, K-type high-purity anti-oxidation wires are uniformly selected, with annual signal drift controlled below 0.5℃, to ensure that the melt temperature of transparent medical plastics such as COC and PMMA remains consistent in long-cycle production, preventing yellowing, black spots and internal bubbles of finished products.
Dual-point independent sensing becomes the standard configuration of medical hot runner thermocouples. Micro valve pins are easy to form local hot spots at the gate tip, which will cause gate wire drawing, material degradation and transparent part fogging. Dual-point MI thermocouples simultaneously monitor the front tip and rear heating zone of the nozzle, and the controller independently adjusts the power of the two sections of heaters to balance the temperature gradient of the entire nozzle. Spring preloading structures are optimized for clean workshop environments: all spring parts are polished stainless steel without rust, and the fixed bracket adopts snap-on quick disassembly design, which does not need to use metal screws that are easy to leave debris during mold disassembly and maintenance.
Special customized models include cleanroom anti-dust sealed thermocouples with fully encapsulated wire joints to prevent dust in Class 10000 clean workshops from entering the internal insulation layer; low-outgassing thermocouples for implantable medical plastic parts, which pass high-temperature outgassing testing and will not release organic volatile matter to affect product biocompatibility. Medical thermocouple manufacturers need to provide complete material certificates, precision calibration reports and batch traceability documents to help medical mold factories pass customer factory audits and medical device certification. Compared with consumer electronics thermocouples, medical-grade sensors have a 100% full inspection process before delivery, with zero tolerance for surface scratches, wire damage and calibration deviation. Although the procurement cost of medical special thermocouples is 2–3 times that of ordinary industrial sensors, they are indispensable core components to avoid batch scrap of high-value medical plastic parts and meet global medical production safety regulations.
