The performance and longevity of a hot runner thermocouple can be compromised even before it is installed, if improper storage or transportation practices are followed. Thermocouples are sensitive electromechanical devices, and their mineral insulation is hygroscopic-it absorbs moisture from the air. High humidity is the primary enemy of thermocouple integrity. When a thermocouple is stored in an unsealed bag or box in a humid environment, the MgO insulation absorbs water vapor through the sheath's cold end seal or through microscopic pores. Once installed and heated, the moisture vaporises and expands, creating pressure that can crack the seal or sheath. Even if it doesn't crack, the moisture reduces insulation resistance, causing noisy signals and accelerated drift. Therefore, the first rule is to store thermocouples in their original sealed packaging (often with desiccant) until ready for use. If the packaging is opened, keep them in a dry cabinet with relative humidity below 30%. For long-term storage, vacuum-sealed bags with silica gel are recommended. The second precaution is temperature-avoid storing thermocouples near heat sources or in areas with extreme temperature fluctuations, as this can accelerate oxidation of the leads and connectors. Ideal storage temperature is 15-25°C. The third aspect is mechanical protection. Thermocouples are fragile-their thin sheaths can be bent or crushed if heavy items are stacked on them. Store them in protective tubes or dedicated racks with individual slots. Never hang them by the cables, as the weight can stress the internal wire connections. For transportation, use rigid foam-lined cases that prevent movement. The cable should be coiled loosely (not sharply folded) and secured with velcro straps. Avoid sharp bends at the connector strain relief, as this can crack the cable insulation. For air freight, consider that cargo holds can experience low temperatures and pressure changes; sealed bags prevent moisture condensation. Upon receiving a shipment, inspect each thermocouple visually-look for bent probes, damaged threads, and any signs of corrosion on the pins. Before installation, allow the thermocouple to acclimatise to the production area temperature for at least 24 hours, especially if it was stored in a cold warehouse. If you suspect moisture ingress, you can bake the thermocouple in an oven at 120°C for 4-6 hours to dry the insulation, but check with the manufacturer first, as not all materials tolerate this. A simple insulation resistance test upon receipt can confirm the sensor is dry-values above 1000 MΩ are ideal. By implementing these storage and transportation protocols, plants can ensure that every new thermocouple starts its service life in optimum condition, minimising early failures and calibration issues.333
