Biodegradable PLA raw materials have narrow processing temperature windows (200–230℃), poor thermal stability and are extremely prone to thermal degradation and carbonization under slight overheating, putting forward special high-precision, fast-response, anti-acid vapor requirements for supporting hot runner thermocouples. Ordinary standard thermocouples with slow response speed and large measurement deviation cannot meet PLA production demands, requiring targeted optimized solutions in alloy grade, sheath anti-corrosion structure, fast-response probe design and controller matching four dimensions to avoid degradation defects of biodegradable molded parts.
High-precision Grade 1 K-type vacuum annealed thermocouple alloy is mandatory for PLA molds. PLA's allowable temperature fluctuation range is only ±1.5℃; generic Grade 2 probes with inherent tolerance ±1.1℃ plus accumulated drift will easily exceed the safe processing window, triggering polymer chain breakage and product brittleness. Vacuum deep annealing alloy wires minimize long-term zero drift accumulation, locking total measurement deviation within ±0.5℃ after three months of continuous production. J-type iron-constantan probes are completely abandoned for PLA production, as iron oxidation drift will quickly push temperature readings out of the narrow PLA processing range within weeks of operation. All thermocouples undergo enhanced three-point calibration focused on the 200–240℃ low-temperature interval to guarantee accurate feedback in PLA core processing temperature zone.
Acid vapor anti-corrosion sheath structural customization adapts to PLA degradation volatile gas. When PLA overheats, it releases lactic acid volatile vapor with weak corrosivity, which will etch ordinary 304 stainless steel sheaths and oxidize internal junctions over time. PLA dedicated thermocouples upgrade sheath material to 316L mirror seamless stainless steel with dense surface passivation film; mass production molds with long continuous operation cycles select thin-wall Inconel alloy sheaths for stronger acid vapor resistance. The cable and sheath joint adopts double-layer waterproof PTFE molded sealing to block lactic acid condensate from penetrating into the sheath interior during mold shutdown cooling cycles. The inner magnesium oxide filling powder increases compactness to isolate corrosive vapor contact with alloy hot junctions.
Ultra-thin wall fast-response probe design eliminates temperature feedback lag. PLA requires rapid heater power cut-off once the temperature exceeds 230℃ to prevent degradation; standard thick-walled probes with time constant above 5 seconds generate delayed signal feedback, leading to transient overheating of melt inside runner channels. PLA matched thermocouple sensing heads adopt 0.6mm ultra-thin polished seamless sheaths, reducing the time constant below 2 seconds to capture instantaneous gate temperature changes in real time. Spring-loaded nozzle probes use low-compression-stroke thin flat sensing heads to eliminate air gap thermal resistance and further speed up heat exchange response efficiency.
Multi-zone controller signal parameter matching optimizes PID and filtering settings for PLA production. The controller's moving average filtering sampling window is reduced from 8 points to 4 points to accelerate signal response speed without excessive lag; PID proportional gain is moderately increased to realize rapid power reduction once temperature exceeds the upper limit of the PLA window. Dual-point multi-junction thermocouples are preferred for manifold heating zones, comparing deep melt channel temperature and surface metal temperature to detect hidden local overheating zones in advance and trigger power reduction early warning before PLA degradation occurs. Single-point surface ring probes are only allowed for small balanced PLA packaging molds with low production output.
Auxiliary daily maintenance rules extend PLA thermocouple service life. Weekly disassembly cleaning of sensing heads to remove thin layers of carbonized PLA residue formed by slight degradation; every two weeks re-coating thin high-temperature thermal conductive grease to eliminate air gap delay. Strictly control mold purging temperature not exceeding 240℃ to avoid massive PLA acid vapor corrosion of probe sheaths during cleaning cycles. Targeted optimized thermocouple matching solutions stabilize temperature control within PLA's narrow safe processing window, eliminate biodegradable product brittleness, yellowing and strength reduction defects caused by thermocouple measurement error and delayed response.
