Type K thermocouples have become the global standard for hot runner injection molding due to their unique combination of wide temperature range, stability, oxidation resistance, and cost effectiveness. Constructed from Chromel and Alumel alloys, Type K sensors operate reliably from -200°C up to 1260°C, covering nearly all hot runner operating temperatures. Unlike other thermocouple types, Type K exhibits excellent stability at high temperatures, with minimal drift even after prolonged cyclic heating. This stability is critical for maintaining consistent melt viscosity and reducing defects such as short shots, flash, and burn marks. Type K also offers strong resistance to oxidation, making it suitable for long production runs in high-heat environments. Furthermore, Type K thermocouples are universally supported by all major hot runner controllers and follow international standards such as IEC 60584, ensuring compatibility and interchangeability. In contrast, Type J sensors have a narrower temperature range (-40°C to 750°C) and oxidize rapidly in high-temperature conditions, limiting their use to low-heat applications. Type R and S thermocouples, made of platinum-rhodium alloys, provide higher accuracy but come with a much higher price tag and are rarely cost-effective in standard hot runner systems. The widespread adoption of Type K also simplifies procurement, maintenance, and replacement, as they are readily available from multiple suppliers. For these reasons, Type K thermocouples remain the most practical and reliable choice for hot runner systems across automotive, medical, packaging, and electronics industries. Their performance, availability, and cost efficiency make them indispensable to modern injection molding operations.
