Thermocouple wiring is often an afterthought in hot runner installation, but it plays a pivotal role in signal integrity and system reliability. Poor wiring practices can introduce noise, resistance, and intermittent connections, leading to temperature control issues. The two core principles of good wiring are: use the correct cable type and minimize signal path length.

Hot runner thermocouples require compensation grade cable, which matches the thermocouple's alloy characteristics. Using ungraded or general-purpose wire can cause significant signal errors. The cable must also be properly shielded-twisted-pair with a braided stainless steel cover-to resist electromagnetic interference (EMI) from heaters and motors. In multi-zone systems, running parallel thermocouple wires next to power cables should be avoided at all costs.

Length is another critical factor. Longer wires increase resistance, which can degrade the signal, especially in low-voltage systems. Installers should route wires along dedicated channels, away from moving parts, to prevent abrasion and fatigue. Secure cable strain relief is essential to avoid pulling or breaking the wires during mold maintenance. By paying close attention to wiring details, molders can ensure clean, stable signals and maximize the performance of their thermocouples.333
