Medical-grade polycarbonate (PC) is a widely used material for applications such as IV connectors, surgical instruments, and blood collection tubes. Its processing requires exceptional temperature control due to its narrow processing window and sensitivity to degradation. The first requirement is ultra-high accuracy. Medical PC typically processes at 280-320°C, and a temperature deviation of just ±2°C can cause degradation, resulting in yellowing or loss of mechanical properties. Class 1 thermocouples with a tolerance of ±0.5°C are mandatory. The second requirement is low drift. Medical molds often run 24/7, and any drift can lead to degradation. Type K thermocouples with vacuum-annealed wires have lower drift. Type N is even better for long-term stability. The third requirement is biocompatibility. The thermocouple materials must not leach any substances that could contaminate the molded part. The sheath should be 316 stainless steel or Inconel with a passivated surface. The cable insulation should be made of materials that pass USP Class VI testing. The fourth requirement is cleanliness. The thermocouple must be packaged in a clean, particle-free environment and should not shed fibers or particles during installation. Use a thermocouple with a smooth, polished surface. The fifth requirement is the ability to withstand sterilization. The mold may be sterilized with ethylene oxide or gamma radiation. The thermocouple's cable insulation and connector must be resistant to these methods. The sixth requirement is traceability. Each thermocouple must have a unique serial number and a calibration certificate that is traceable to NIST. The certificate should include the actual deviations at the processing temperature. The seventh requirement is a robust sealing. The cold end must be sealed to prevent any ingress of moisture or contaminants. A glass-to-metal seal or fully potted connector is required. The eighth requirement is the response time. Medical molds often have fast cycle times (e.g., 10-15 seconds), so the thermocouple should have a response time of <1 second to allow rapid control adjustments. The ninth requirement is the replacement interval. Due to the critical nature of medical devices, many plants replace thermocouples annually, regardless of condition. By selecting thermocouples that meet these stringent requirements, medical molders can ensure the consistent production of safe, high-quality components, meeting regulatory standards and protecting patient health.333
