The main signs of aging in color-changing silica gel are incomplete color recovery, physical structural damage, and functional decline. These changes indicate a significant decrease in its adsorption capacity, necessitating timely replacement.

1. Abnormal Color: The most obvious sign of aging

Incomplete Recovery: After heat regeneration, the blue silica gel still retains grayish-white, dark red, or locally blackened areas, failing to return to a uniform deep blue.

Dull Color: The color lacks the saturation of new silica gel, appearing cloudy and dull.

Uneven Color Change: Some particles change color, while others remain pink, with a slow or stagnant reaction.

Note: Cobalt chloride indicator deactivates due to long-term thermal cycling and oxidation, leading to a degradation of its color-changing function.

2. Physical Deterioration: Manifestations of Structural Damage

State Normal Performance Aging Signs

Particle Integrity Hard, intact Noticeably broken, crumbles into powder easily

Looseness Particles roll freely Clumping, hardened, difficult to disperse

Touch Dry, non-sticky Residual dampness or unusually heavy

If a large amount of powder appears, it indicates that the silica microporous structure has collapsed, and its adsorption capacity has been severely lost.

3. Functional Degradation: Decreased Actual Performance

Slow Moisture Absorption Response: After being placed in a humid environment, the color change is extremely slow or does not change at all;

Reduced Regeneration Efficiency: Requires a longer baking time for partial recovery, and the color restoration gradually decreases;

Failure to Maintain Sealing and Dryness: Color changes within a short period in a desiccator, unable to maintain a low-humidity environment.

Special Reminder: When used for precision moisture protection of cameras, pharmaceuticals, etc., once signs of aging are found, the device should be replaced immediately to ensure reliable protection.
