In industrial thermal measurement applications where operating temperatures exceed 250°C, standard platinum resistance temperature detectors (RTDs) and conventional installation practices often fail due to material degradation, insulation failure, signal drift, and structural damage. As a professional expert in high-temperature thermal engineering, this article focuses on critical precautions for installing platinum RTDs in extreme high-temperature environments, covering material selection, thermal isolation, heat dissipation design, wiring specifications, and sealing requirements to ensure long-term stability, measurement accuracy, and operational safety under sustained high heat. Material selection is the foundation of reliable high-temperature RTD installation. For process temperatures above 250°C, only high-temperature specialized platinum RTD assemblies must be used, paired with ceramic protection tubes that offer excellent thermal stability, oxidation resistance, and insulation performance far superior to metal tubes. Sealing components must be replaced with high-temperature resistant gaskets, such as graphite, metal-clad, or ceramic fiber gaskets, eliminating the risk of melting, aging, or loss of sealing performance that plagues ordinary rubber or plastic gaskets under extreme heat. Cable selection directly determines system safety and signal integrity. Standard PVC cables cannot withstand temperatures above 80°C and will quickly soften, carbonize, and short-circuit in high-temperature zones. Therefore, high-temperature cables rated for ≥200°C, such as fiberglass-insulated, silicone rubber, or mineral-insulated (MI) cables, are mandatory. These cables maintain stable insulation and mechanical strength at elevated temperatures, preventing insulation breakdown, leakage current, and signal distortion caused by thermal aging. Thermal isolation and heat dissipation are essential to protect electrical components from excessive heat. The terminal junction box must be mounted far away from direct high-temperature surfaces and equipped with an extended heat dissipation section or radiation fin assembly to reduce heat conduction along the protection tube. This design lowers the temperature at wiring terminals and internal circuits, effectively preventing terminal melting, solder joint failure, and connector aging, which are common failure modes in high-temperature installations. Wiring layout in high-temperature areas requires strict compliance with safety specifications. High-temperature cables must be routed away from direct heat sources, hot pipe walls, and radiant surfaces to avoid prolonged exposure to extreme heat. Cable supports and fixtures should use high-temperature resistant materials, and excessive bending or stretching near hot zones must be avoided. For extremely high-temperature applications above 400°C, mineral-insulated metal-sheathed cables are the optimal choice, providing superior heat resistance and physical protection. Additional precautions include avoiding contact between the protection tube and overheated structural parts, ensuring sufficient air circulation for passive cooling, and selecting high-temperature resistant lead wires and connection terminals. Regular inspection for insulation aging, gasket degradation, and thermal deformation is also necessary to maintain long-term reliability. In summary, high-temperature RTD installation demands strict adherence to specialized material standards, effective thermal isolation, reasonable heat dissipation, and safe wiring practices. By using high-temperature cables, ceramic sleeves, heat-resistant seals, and heat-dissipating junction boxes, engineers can prevent insulation failure, component melting, and signal distortion. These measures ensure platinum RTDs operate stably and accurately in continuous high-temperature environments, providing dependable temperature monitoring for metallurgy, petrochemical, thermal power, and other high-heat industrial sectors.111
