A clear maintenance protocol is essential to prevent accidental damage. The first rule is to always disconnect the thermocouple connector before disassembling the mold. This prevents the cable from being pulled when the mold halves are separated. Use a connector with a positive locking mechanism to ensure a secure fit, but also use a tool to release the lock-never pull the cable. The second rule is to use a dedicated cleaning procedure. When cleaning the mounting hole, use a drill bit of the correct size to remove carbonized resin. However, do not use a drill to clean the hole while the thermocouple is still installed-this can bend the probe or strip the threads. Remove the thermocouple first. Use a solvent that is compatible with the thermocouple materials; aggressive solvents can damage the sheath or cable insulation. The third rule is to handle the thermocouple with care. Never drop the probe on the floor, as this can damage the internal junction. When carrying a thermocouple, hold it by the probe body or the connector, not by the cable. The fourth rule is to store the thermocouple in a safe place during maintenance. Do not leave it on a workbench where it could be stepped on or crushed by tools. Use a dedicated rack or a clean container. The fifth rule is to use the correct tools for removal. Use a wrench that fits the thermocouple's hex flats exactly; an ill-fitting wrench can round the flats and make removal difficult. Do not use pliers or pipe wrenches on the sheath.
